A portrait of Perfi and Abdullah Öcalan, video still, 0:08sec, 2012

This video portrait of a young Kurdish girl was recorded in Limassol, Cyprus, where her family found asylum after fleeing Turkey because of political circumstances and their support of Abdullah Öcalan. Interested in exploring how historical narratives can be contested when confronted with the singularity of the individuals’ stories, Xenofontos juxtaposes the vitality of the girl with the heavy symbolism and ideological signs placed on the wall behind her. In this way, she debases the grounds of naivety and simplicity and creates a (domestic) point of contention for the mechanisms of production and understanding of history. In this way, an alternative understanding of the power of collective events can arise.
