Topos or Closer to deja vu than nostalgia (Cyprus, the Island of Love), 8:09min, 2012

A mediation on the ways in which the documentation of liminal spaces and places affects our experience of the lived qualities of the past. The flickering lights (an effect created by the recording of a moving, backlit window shutter) give way to the view of a high way road, moving cars and the surrounding urban environment. Highlighting the fluidity of time through the black and white rendering of moving horizontal planes, a feeling of eeriness arises that is closer to déjà vu (a moment experienced as an exact repetition of the past) than nostalgia (a wishful longing for a period in the past). The minimal means through which the spatial and temporal liminality is represented highlight the oftentimes feigned sentimentality that rests in the documentation of transitions.
